The great house of the Marquesses of "La Quinta Roja", nowadays the hotel of the same name, is one of the finest examples of the architecture of the island's Baroque period.

The original building dates back to the 16th century to coincide with the royal grant by King Charles II of the title of Marquess of the "Quinta Roja".

The house was never directly affected by the 1706 eruption, which represents a key point and watershed in the fortunes and history of the town.

In October 1709 the Sisters of the Order of the Inmaculate Conception took refuge there, in the home of their protector, the Marquess of "La Quinta Roja". After taking over part of the house, the nuns finally moved back to their convent once it had been rebuilt, some 40 years later.
